Narrative
Justification: All HBOI undergraduate and graduate students are required to submit a research project and present the project to a group of HBOI scientists. In addition, the students may be required to submit posters at regional or national conferences. One example: HBOI students are required to submit posters for the Indian River Lagoon Symposium, a three day event for researchers and the community that focuses on water quality and management, harmful algae blooms, human and marine mammal health, conservation and other HBOI research topics. Graduate students enrolled in the new Master of Science Program in Marine Science and Oceanography, and the new doctoral track in Integrated Biology will have multiple requirements for poster presentations, as this format is considered one of the first research formats used for the student to practice presenting their research and answering questions with a discerning scientific audience.
Problem that the HBOI Poster Printer addresses: The HBOI students have complained that the external vendor quality is inconsistent, cannot be altered once submitted, and is a time-consuming process that can be eliminated with the in-house production of posters. Students argue that self-created posters will be more professional, allow them to reduce the time to completion, eliminate the editing constraints, and increase the quality and ease of production. In addition, the students will be honing a skillset that will be useful to communicate their future research and work to numerous audiences.
