Narrative
The College of Engineering and Computer Science has been providing virtual desktops for our students using our existing virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). Since these are virtual desktops we can provide access at “any time” or from “anywhere”. Engineering students can access these virtual desktops and the software installed on them from a majority of mobile devices that are available as well as standard PCs and laptops. Unfortunately, the server hardware that supports these virtual desktops is about 5 years old and due for replacement as some of them are beginning to fail. We are asking the techfee committee to please provide funds in the amount of $68,640 to purchase new VDI servers. The purchase of new VDI servers will allow us to continue to deliver virtual desktops to our students. Virtual desktops enrich the educational experience by allowing students to access software remotely. They no longer have to come on campus and go to a computer lab. Students can now work remotely from any location. The purchase of these new VDI servers will strengthen and expand our undergraduate programs as our students have varied schedules and making the compute resources available to them anywhere and anytime.
