Narrative
Narrative The Galleries have upwards of 45 students per semester and over 500 visitors to various events each term. The Galleries is requesting grant money for the purchase of a Konica Minolta printer/copier/scanner for the Galleries’ Student Learning Lab. Its purpose is to replace our current aging Konica Minolta that serves the Galleries’ sizable student staff and interns, as well as the Museum Studies class that is taught every Fall and Spring semester. Our current Konica was purchased approximately 10 years ago, is now discontinued, and is showing signs of wear and age producing sub-standard printing in some instances. Notably, there are major components in this machine such as the drums and other parts that due to age are reaching end of life. Replacement cost for these components is extremely high, and it makes more sense to replace the unit entirely for a slightly larger investment with a new Konica Minolta model that is current with today’s computer operating systems, emerging mobile connectivity needs, and other technologies. About the Galleries The University Galleries function as a learning laboratory for Visual Arts and other Arts and Letters students through: An upper division course, Museum Studies and Gallery Practices (ARH 4974); Volunteer Intern Program; Directed Independent Studies; Student Employees; and Work Study Employees. Through this strong student engagement each year the University Galleries present high quality exhibitions in two gallery facilities and a large public space adjacent to one of the Galleries. These exhibitions and programs are attended by thousands of FAU students, thousands of community members from the surrounding region and hundreds of pre-college age children through the Galleries' Museum Education Program – a program engaging FAU students as interactive exhibition guides and outreach arts educators in community-based after-school settings. A grant from an external source provides student employment for this program. The Galleries are a regionally recognized center for the presentation of innovative contemporary art and design exhibitions and related public programs that often include cross-disciplinary perspectives through collaboration with many academic departments and organizations in the community. Students involved with the Galleries through coursework, internships and employment receive invaluable career-oriented experiences and training as demonstrated by numerous former students associated with the Galleries who have gone on to employment in the arts and/or nationally recognized graduate programs. In addition to the Museum Studies and Galleries Practices Class (ARH 4794) (30 students per semester), the Galleries engage, serve and train other groups of students as follows: Student employees (8 per year); Recently graduated students (2 per year);Volunteer Interns (6 – 8 per year); Directed Independent Studies students (4 per year); Bachelor of Fine Arts graduating class (40 students per year); Masters of Fine Arts students graduating class (6 students per year).
