Narrative
This Tech Fee Proposal is being submitted to upgrade outdated computers and equipment in 9 classrooms and labs in the Department of Biology. The current computers in these rooms range from 5 to 8 years old. Biology courses are typically required for most degrees and is a fundamental aspect to any career or future endeavor in the medical field. Also, the Department of Biology provides hands on education which engages students to not only learn Biology, but also to love to learn. The machines in those classrooms have become unreliable to the teaching efforts to the many students who attend classes in those labs. The requested microscopes will be used by students participating in laboratory courses including life science, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, comparative animal physiology, vertebrate structure, development and evolution, plant physiology, and microbiology for health sciences. Students will use them to develop basic laboratory skills while learning about the tissues and systems of the human body, how organisms reproduce and develop, how chemicals impact living organisms, properties of bacteria and infectious agents and how such agents are identified, and many other fundamental biological concepts. The microscope is the most basic and standard component of a biologist's tool kit and serves as a critical access point to a vast array of biology concepts. The classrooms are all located in the Sanson Life Sciences building: SC 107, SC 108, SC 115, SC 116, SC 119, SC 143, SC 144, SC 145, SC 146. There are thousands of students who attend classes in these rooms per year. A document is attached referencing the approximate attendance for the 2018 academic year.
