Narrative
The University Theatre, built in 1968-69, is a 500 seat venue that hosts classes and over 100 performances and lectures each year. Many components, including the stage and house computerized electronic control systems are old. The performance lighting control system is an outdated memory console that uses a 3.5" floppy drive for storage. The purpose of this Tech Fee proposal is to replace the house and stage lighting systems with a new lighting data distribution system with network connections from the lighting control console to key locations in the theatre. The system would include a dedicated lighting control network, appropriate hardware interfaces for modern computerized lighting equipment, and a WIFI system that will allow IOS and android devices to remotely access the console. . The University Theatre is the central performing arts curriculum venue and the University’s prime classroom space for all music performance ensembles. It is the only performance space available to host the Music Department’s 45-concert season, the Dance program, and major theatre performances. The degree programs in Music, Theatre and Dance are professional and pre-professional programs and the students must have a performance space to support their degree requirements. The direct impact on students is significant— in the Music program 152 students are scheduled in class on stage for 19 hours per week, 25 student concerts are presented by 572 students in ensembles per academic year, and 15 student degree recitals are hosted annually. The Department of Theatre and Dance impacts over 185 students with dance and theatrical performances through 30 performances per year. All performances and lectures held in the University Theatre are open to the public. The students would benefit from a facility that uses current technology.
Facilities
There have been no major renovation to the interior of the University Theatre and it now has many significant safety concerns. Inspection completed in 2010, 2014, and 2017 all cited serious issues with the lighting systems as well as the rigging, sound system and seating. This proposal requests $350,000 in Tech Fee funds to replace the house and stage lighting systems with a new lighting data distribution system with network connections from the lighting control console to key locations in the theatre. The system would include a dedicated lighting control network, appropriate hardware interfaces for modern computerized lighting equipment, and a WIFI system that will allow IOS and android devices to remotely access the console. The entire facility renovation will cost over $800,000. The College and University are working together to fund the non-technology infrastructure repairs needed in the University Theatre. The Tech Fee would only be used to fund the new lighting data distribution system Attached to this proposal is the “Report University Theatre”. The portion of this report that addresses the lighting system and proposed solution is on page 15 (PDF pg 19) with the estimated cost of the lighting system on page 23 (PDF pg 27).
