Narrative

The FAU Libraries are requesting $23,923.50 for access to streaming videos through Academic Video Online: Premium.

Academic Video Online (AVON) is owned by Alexander Street Press, a humanities and social sciences publisher of large-scale digital collections that feature letters and diaries, photographs, essays, short fiction, musical scores, film scripts, plays, and streaming music and video. The FAU Libraries currently own a number of these Alexander Street Press resources including Asian American Drama (plays) and Black Thought and Culture (speeches, interviews, leaflets), and the streaming video collections Counseling and Therapy in Video and Ethnographic Video Online. The video collections are especially popular with FAU users as there were over 40,000 views of our streaming video collections in 2012-2013, 30,000 of which were from Alexander Street Press videos alone.

AVON is Alexander Street’s most comprehensive video subscription product that comprises content from 26 full video collections and 8 bonus discipline clusters. Upon its completion, it will include more than 23,000 full video titles, not clips. As of October 2013, AVON offers over 11,000 hours of content. Full collections that are or will be included in AVON are:

·         American History in Video*

·         Art and Architecture in Video

·         Asian Film Online

·         Black Studies in Video

·         Classical Music in Video

·         Counseling and Therapy in Video: Volume I, Volume II, and Volume III*

·         Theatre in Video*

·         The Video Journal of Counseling and Therapy

·         World History in Video

·         World Newsreels Online, 1929-1966

*Video collections already owned by the FAU Libraries. The requested funding price takes into account the fact that the Libraries already own 11 of the collections in the AVON package.

The eight bonus clusters are:

·         Area Studies Video Online

·         Ethnic Studies Video Online

·         Humanities Video Online

·         Psychology Video Online

·         Philosophy and Religious Studies in Video

·         Science Video Online

·         Women’s and Gender Studies Video Online

·         World Languages and Literature in Video

The videos featured in AVON include documentaries, news programs and newsreels, commercials, raw footage, performances, and interviews. Many are Academy and Emmy award-winning titles or archival material that previously had been unavailable through other outlets. AVON titles are generally not available legally through distribution platforms and video-sharing websites such as YouTube. If a video is also found outside of AVON, its audio and sound quality will likely be poor or average at best, or it might only be available in short clips. Most of the streaming content in AVON is not available in DVD or VHS formats in the FAU Libraries media collection.

Content partners in AVON include, but are not limited to, PBS, the BBC, CBS, A&E, Pearson, Insight Media, and California Newsreel.

Searchable and scrolling transcripts are available for over 12,000 titles and can be read while viewing the videos. Users may create, annotate, and share video clips and playlists with students via email, and also embed them in Blackboard.

Target Student Population to Be Served by the Project

Streaming videos are ideal for both distance learning and face-to-face courses that require students to view films outside of class, whether they are related to assignments or projects, or to supplement a lecture or discussion. AVON covers a multitude of subject areas that support student learning in all of FAU’s colleges.

AVON would be available online and accessible to current students, faculty, and staff on campus and remotely through EZproxy.

Space Administration

No physical space is needed to store this resource as it is an online product. Users may stream AVON videos through a Windows and Macintosh desktop computer or laptop, and also on iOS and Android mobile devices.
