Narrative
Several student groups and faculty have approached the HBOI Librarian to develop an ArcGIS Lab in the current Studio and eLearning classroom. Dr. Dennis Hanisak and Dr. Peter McCarthy, HBOI’s Director and Associate Director of Education, emphasized that all HBOI students, graduate and undergraduate, should not only have classroom instruction in ArcGis, but the students need repeated exposure to field experiences collecting data, and collaborative projects demonstrating their proficiency. Currently, HBOI students do not have access to an ArcGIS instructional classroom, a practice lab or ArcGIS software instruction with interactive or collaborative capabilities. There are no field laptops or mini-Ipads with GPS capabilities. ArcGIS Lab Justification. The proposed ArcGis Lab is designed to replace eight antiquated student PC’s built into a non-functioning network and to expand the student seating and student access to necessary technologies and collaborative instruction. Dr. Nick Dickson and new faculty, Dr. Andia Chaves Fonnegra, have proposed expanding their current offerings at HBOI. Dr Dickson has instructed students individually in ArcGIS and has identified the need to offer instruction. In addition, the ArcGIS course can be added to the Masters of Science in the Marine Science and Oceanography curriculum and incorporated into the research and work projects in the ocean, environmental and marine sciences. The proposed HBOI ArcGIS Lab provides students with a state-of-the art interactive, online ArcGIS lab with recording, presentation and collaboration capabilities. The proposed mobile equipment permits field research with mobile iPads (GeoPads) with ArcGIS software that can be used in field research and for online project visualization. The term "GeoPad" describes a rugged field-ready tablet-based field mapping system capable of integrated GPS/GIS/measurement/photo/data collection that can be held in one hand. The laptops with ArcGIS are for students.
