Narrative
The College for Design & Social Inquiry Advising Center is requesting funding for twenty-five Surface Pro tablets, twenty-five Type-Covers for the tablets, one iPad Pro to help improve our social media presence, and one locking charge-dock to hold all tablets and laptops. The utility of tablets has allowed our office to assist current students, and newly admitted transfer students in course selections, scheduling, and navigating FAU’s various offices, departments, and online tools like GPA calculators, Degree Audit Reports, and the new Banner XE registration system. Tablets have been especially critical the past several months as construction forced an office relocation. Our ability to assist our students has seamlessly continued through construction due to the utility of the Surface tablets. We have used tablets during advising appointments to allow students to register for recommended courses in real-time, while also allowing students to navigate to university web pages and documents. We have learned that we can do even more to assist our students. We want to give our transfer students the flexibility to experience CDSI in a more interactive way during transfer orientations. There are practical concerns that additional tablets will help alleviate, which is primarily the ability to move our transfer orientations to any room on campus at any time. This would give us the flexibility to split-up transfer orientations into smaller groups to give new students a more one-on-one experience with advisors. This will continue to allow us to contribute to the FAU Strategic Plan goal of enhancing the “brand” by making student transitions to our college seamless, interactive, and engaging. Perhaps, more importantly, this aligns with the Strategic Plan goal of improving “Quality.” Our proposal will allow us to use technology to improve the quality of our student’s experience with advising and with the college overall.
