Narrative

The FAU Libraries are requesting $22,530.66 to purchase e-book collections from Oxford University Press’s Florida Scholarship Online (FLASO) and MIT Press Scholarship Online (MITPSO).

FLASO and MITPSO are subsets of University Press Scholarship Online (UPSO) which serves as the academic monograph platform for content from 13 university presses including the University of California Press, Stanford University Press, University Press of Florida, MIT Press, and Oxford University Press, and totaling over 13,500+ titles in 28 subject areas. The FAU Libraries currently own a collection of history and philosophy e-books through Oxford Scholarship Online, the UPSO subset for Oxford University Press.

  •  Florida Scholarship Online (FLASO)
    The University Press of Florida
(UPF) serves as the official publisher for the State University System of Florida and has been producing high quality content since 1945.

    FLASO
features content in four subject areas: Archaeology, Society and Culture, History, Literature, and Music. As of October 2013, there were 254 titles in FLASO with more slated for publication in 2014.

  • MIT Press Scholarship Online (MITPSO)
    The MIT Press
serves as the official publisher of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA. Its core publications are based in science and technology, but the press also explores other fields such as architecture, social theory, and economics.

    MITPSO's
content is based more in science and technology and includes books on topics related to biology, psychology, neuroscience, computer science, and mathematics. Business, linguistics, philosophy, and finance titles are also covered in MITPSO. As of October 2013, there were 312 titles in MITPSO with more forthcoming in 2014.

Oxford has not yet released the list of e-book titles that will be published in FLASO and MITPSO in 2014, but FLASO is slated to add approximately 50 titles at $69.31 per title, while MITPSO could see 30 titles at $48.70 per titles. The amount that the Libraries are requesting would be for the one-time purchase of FLASO content for 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 as well as MITPSO content from 2014. It includes a 20% discount that Oxford University Press is offering to FAU through spring 2014 when the Technology Fee funds are distributed.

New e-book content is added to FLASO and MITPSO three times a year (in January, May, and September). All titles provide simultaneous access and will be discoverable through SearchWiSE (the Libraries’ tool for searching across a variety of quality information that the FAU Libraries provide), the library’s online catalog, and Oxford’s UPSO cross-searchable platform. Users are allowed to print and download (in PDF) single copies of pages from FLASO and MITPSO e-books, but must also abide by the legal notice that is available on the UPSO website. Pages from these e-books can be downloaded to mobile devices that support PDFs.

Target Student Population to Be Served by the Project

E-books are ideal for students in both distance learning and face-to-face courses, and provide simultaneous access to all students, faculty, and staff, which is a great benefit to multi-campus institutions such as FAU.  Many of the FLASO and MITPSO books support student course work and faculty research in areas that include but are not limited to Florida history and culture, Latin American Studies, English literature, African American history, behavioral neuroscience, media studies, econometrics, climate studies, and bioethics.

Space Administration

No physical space is needed to store the content of the FLASO and MITPSO e-books. The resources would be made accessible 24/7 to current students, faculty, and staff on campus and remotely through EZproxy.
