Narrative
Performance technology for exercise, fitness and sport has advanced rapidly over the past few years. Currently, the Exercise Science and Health Promotion Department does not have the latest technology nor a complete system for different types of training and testing for speed, agility acceleration, explosive power and cadence training to use in several classes. I am using the terminology "technology monitoring system" for this proposal. which will also provide wireless timing gates, wireless starting devices, and a wireless jump mat which can be used with a computer tablet to make the unit portable for any class. The students' educational benefits can be well documented if this technology monitoring system is purchased and utilized in kinesiology, biomechanics, practicum and other undergraduate/graduate classes. For Spring 2018, we expect to have at least 150 students in the three kinesiology (~120 students) and biomechanics (~ 30 students) classes. Of course, these classes are offered each semester with similar enrollment. This system will give us faculty the ability to educate the students how to optimize performance whether indoors or outdoors in real time with the the wireless sensors and data collection ability. In addition, other universities and professional sites use this system, thus, our students would be able to have the skills to operate it after graduation or during their internship requirement. This system, in regards to the FAU strategic research pillars would relate to Sensing and Smart Systems (I-Sense), which will provide advancement in computing and wireless sensors, assisting our students and faculty to discover new technologies and uses for the system in various environments. The system will also provide opportunities in the community engagement and healthy aging areas, such as our FAU Well Program, for research and student experiences.
Facilities
No facility renovations nor upgrades will be required. Current facilities can be utilized to set up and operate this technology monitoring system. The system can be stored when not in use.
Hardware Requirements
No hardware requirements will be needed other than a portable computer, I-Pad, which, when purchased, will comply with standards established by the FAU OIT Standards.
Software Requirements
Currently, any software requirements would be set up by the College of Education technology team, for example, making sure the wireless connections work, plus the computer tablet would comply with FAU OIT Standards.
Personnel Costs
No OPS or time-limited appointments for personnel are needed for this technology fee.
Other Costs
Three-gate Speedlight timing system, $8,345.85 Jump mat timing system, $2,498.46 Shipping 85.00 Total $10,929.31 I-Pad to use with system $416.80
Timeline
When monies are immediately available, the order will be placed immediately to ensure arrival by the beginning of the term, hopefully Summer 2019 or sooner, for use in classes.
Sustainability
This equipment requested is state-of-the-art, so the sustainability should be a minimum of ten to fifteen years. This particular technology will be maintained by the Exercise Science faculty (me) and research/graduate assistants.
Resource Matching
Currently, no resource matching is available for this technology fee.
Implementing Organization
The equipment manufacturer will implement the initial set up and installation of the equipment, which is included in the purchase price. No additional costs or resource restraints will be needed. The Exercise Science and Health Promotion faculty (me) and graduate students will be involved with the initial the set up and installation of the equipment, in conjunction with the College of Education OIT for the appropriate software. No additional costs or resource restraints will be needed.
