Narrative
The computers in the School of Urban and Regional Planning’s (SURP) student classroom/lab (mixed use room) are almost six years old and becoming less reliable. We are requesting funds to purchase IGEL UDC (universal desktop converter) software. The IGEL UDC will, as the name implies, coverts the desktop into a thin client which we will use in conjunction with our Citrix Virtual Desktop infrastructure. We are using the Citrix Virtual Desktops infrastructure to provide students with off-campus access to virtual desktops, course required applications and network access.
Using the IGEL UDC software will enable us to use the hardware on the existing computers in the lab in conjunction with the hardware running the virtual computers on the Citrix infrastructure. This will significantly lengthen the usefulness of the computers in the lab and increase performance for students running resource intensive applications such as Esri City Engine, AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, GIS programs, and others.
Using IGEL UDC in this lab will also assist SURP in containing software costs. We have a fixed number of licenses for some software, such as Adobe Creative Cloud. By using IGEL UDC in the student lab we will be able to offer more virtual desktops to student’s off-campus because we will be using the same software licenses on and off campus. The IGEL UDC licenses are perpetual so no additional purchases will be required to keep the classroom/lab available for use.
