Narrative
Students enrolled in Boca Campus sections of ARE 4313 Art: Elementary School and ARE 4240 Special Methods: Art (co-listed with ARE 6342 Art Education in Secondary School) during the spring, summer, and fall semester 2019-2021, will benefit from the curriculum that will be implemented using applications for teaching and learning on iPads. Integrating technology in education programs is essential because FAU students training to become k-12 teachers must have the skills to teach using technology in an innovative way. Curriculum for integrating visual arts and technology will be taught in the courses and students will design lessons that utilize applications for teaching children concepts that connect visual representations with science, social studies, and language arts concepts (Watson, 2016). As a faculty member, I will benefit through research conducted in creating the initial curriculum and continued professional development in utilizing technological applications that support k12 learning in visual arts, science, social studies, and language arts. Visual arts play an integral role in this integration project as this discipline is critical to developing young students' first graphic symbol system (recognition of symbols and interpretation of the meaning) (Cartwright, 2008). FAU students will benefit from engagement in the inquiry process: observing, defining a problem, formulating questions, hypothesizing, experimenting, gathering data, analyzing the results, reflecting on findings, and disseminating information with others (Gettings, 2016). Teaching and learning through the integration of technology and visual arts provides FAU students with many educational benefits including knowledge of applications that are best suited for K12 classrooms, pedagogical models for technology integration, and inquiry process experience related to educator professional development.
Facilities
No facilities renovations or upgrades are required.
Hardware Requirements
This project requires: 8- iPad Pro, 12.9 inch, 256 GB, Wi-Fi enabled; 8- Smart keyboard Folio for 12.9 inch iPad Pro; 8- Apple Pencil (2nd generation). Students (divided into small groups) will utilize the 8 iPads in class only under the instructor's supervision. The instructor will keep the iPads with accessories in a locked cabinet in her faculty office.
Software Requirements
No software requirements for this project.
Personnel Costs
No personnel costs-OPS or other time-limited appointments.
Other Costs
I do not anticipate other costs to be associated with this project.
Timeline
Late Fall 2019- order iPads, covers, and Apple pens. Once received, Dr. Susannah Brown will unpack and set up the applications (free online apps) that will assist in implementing the technology and visual arts curriculum. If time allows, one project will be introduced to FAU students enrolled in ARE 4313 (one section) as a pilot study. Spring 2020- Implement curriculum with students enrolled in ARE 4240 (ARE 6342) and selected sections of ARE 4313. 1. First 2 weeks of the semester, students complete a pre-test concerning their abilities to teach K12 children through technology. The instructor introduces the curriculum and breaks students into groups for project work using iPads in class. 2. Week 4 of the semester, the instructor teaches sample lessons using iPads as a model of visual arts and technology curriculum. 3. Week 6 of the semester, students work in groups to develop lessons using iPads. 4. Week 10 of the semester, student groups present lessons using iPads to the class. 5. Week 12 of the semester, students complete a post-test concerning their abilities to teach K12 children through technology. 6. Week 14, data gathered throughout the project is analyzed and shared with FAU students. Summer 2020 The same curriculum will be implemented for students enrolled in ARE 4313 (in-person section). The timeframe will be shorter due to the 8-week semester. Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 The same curriculum will be implemented for students enrolled in ARE 4313 and ARE 4240 (co-listed ARE 6342). Late Spring 2021 The instructor will analyze data gathered throughout the project and share with other art educators through a variety of forums such as conference presentations, publications, and workshops with other educators. Curriculum adjustments will be made according to data collected during the first year of implementation. Summer 2021 and Fall 2021and Spring 2022 The revised curriculum will be implemented using a similar schedule as spring 2020.
Sustainability
The sustainability of this project is high beyond the initial project period of 1 year because the iPads will remain at FAU College of Education, Department of Teaching and Learning for future semesters and use by students enrolled in ARE 4313 and ARE 4240 (ARE 6342 co-listed). As long as the iPads are in working order, the curriculum can continue to be implemented with FAU students.
Resource Matching
There is no resource matching for this proposal.
Implementing Organization
As a faculty member of the College of Education, Department of Teaching and Learning, I will serve as the organization or person implementing the project. I do not foresee any additional costs or resource restraints for this project.
