Narrative
Purchasing a SMART Board Interactive Flat Panel will further align and prepare our pre-service teachers for the classroom while they complete their fieldwork/internship and ultimately seek employment. As the districts become more savvy with technological resources, it is important that FAU students have the prior knowledge and practice to utilize this same equipment. In 2018, Palm Beach County School District purchased 11,000 SMART Boards district-wide. Each classroom in the district, as well as all media centers and auditoriums will feature this interactive educational tool by 2021. Currently, some FAU students may use the board during their practicum and student teaching hours in the field, however, they lack the prior experience needed to learn to integrate their content curriculum to deliver their lessons. This proposal requests the purchase of one SMART Board and mobile cart. FAU students will utilize this tool to prepare for their practicum placement by learning to integrate lessons using the panel. With this purchase, faculty and adjuncts, especially those teaching practicum courses, will have the ability to incorporate the SMART Board into curriculum to support students in their lesson delivery. Faculty can model teaching strategies and then students can create and deliver interactive and engaging lessons. Our students will now be able to attend fieldwork at their assigned schools knowing how to utilize the board and continue to practice with the guidance of their school-based Clinical Educator. The request of the half day of professional development will only initially introduce our department to the features of this SMART Board. Moving forward, we plan to collaborate with the district to work with their trainers and Technology Trailblazers for sustainability. Since our program prepares teachers for employment in Palm Beach County, the PD Department is always eager to work with their future teachers--our students.

Sustainability
The key to sustainability for the SMART board is training and professional development. Though the goal is to purchase a half day of training from SMART, the intention is to partner with the school district’s technology department. By collaborating, faculty will be trained to incorporate the board into their curriculum. Also, students will also be trained through practice during their Practicum semester and then will have a SMART Board in their placement class during their student teaching internship.
