Narrative
Florida Atlantic University is known for its diversity both in its student body and the programs that it offers. Through this resource, students will have electronic access to millions of pages of primary source materials. The content spans over 500 years and includes thousands of original manuscripts, maps and images, as well as an interactive chronology, extensive bibliography and tutorials. When students have access to primary source material they become critical thinkers as they begin to analyze and work with the primary documents for their course work. This resource supports the following courses: The American South (AMH 3400); African-American History to 1877 (AMH 3571); Colonial North America (4110); Civil War and Reconstruction (AMH 4170); Slavery and Abolition in the Americas (HIS 4451); Historical Research Methods (HIS 3150) Human and Cultural Rights (ANT 4006); African-American Anthropology (ANT 4315); Rhetoric of Social Protest (SPC 4633); Gender and Society (SYD 4800); Poverty and Society (SYO 4534); The Politics of Human Rights (INR 4075); Education in a Multicultural Society (EDF 3203); Diversity and Social Vulnerability in Public Safety Administration (PAD 4894). Based on Fall 2018 enrollment figures, this resource could impact 473 Political Science majors, 147 History majors, and 100 Anthropology majors for a total of 720 students. The material covered in this database is one that students will come to benefit from as they are presented with the different varieties of slavery, the legacy of slavery, the social justice perspective, and the continued existence of slavery today.
Note: Our student count is calculated based on annual e-book (266,481) and e-journal (1,286,141) usage giving us a total of 1,552,622.
