Narrative
As the most diverse university in the Florida SUS, FAU has been designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. This means at least 25 percent of full-time undergraduate students are of Hispanic origin. The e-books from these collections will benefit undergraduate and graduate students who are native or non-native Spanish speakers in all disciplines. These collections support student success, discovery, inquiry, and instruction. Students taking Spanish classes and learning the language can also use these resources to complement their coursework and research projects, e.g. all SPN, SPT, and SPW courses including SPN 1120 (Beginning) up to 888 students in Fall 2019, SPN 2220 (Intermediate) up to 68 students, SPN 3400 (Advanced) up to 44 students, SPW 3012-6939 (Special Topics in Spanish Literature) up to 125 students. This proposal is for the purchase of five JSTOR e-book collections, providing access to 769 Spanish language e-books. Books at JSTOR offers Spanish-language scholarly e-books from leading publishers, such as El Colegio de México, Ediciones UC, and Marcial Pons Ediciones de Historia, representing a wide range of disciplines in History, Political Science, Sociology, and Literature. The collections feature unlimited access (Digital Rights Management-free), which allows for unlimited concurrent use and unlimited chapter downloads and printing. The e-books work just like the journals on JSTOR, providing a familiar user experience for researchers. The FAU Libraries would use the awarded Tech Fee funds to purchase Sets 4-8 of the Spanish Collections. This will update and build on a previous successful Tech Fee proposal for Sets 1-3 of these collections.
Note: Our student count is calculated based on annual e-book (266,481) and e-journal (1,286,141) usage giving us a total of 1,552,622.
