Narrative
This proposal seeks to extend and support the technological capabilities of the Visual Arts and Art History Sculpture Studio at the Boca Raton campus for the benefit of all students. The VA107 Sculpture Studio currently has a dedicated rapid prototyping space called the Digital Bunker. This dedicated space houses one Universal Laser cutter and one small 3D printer. The funds requested will go toward the acquisition of three major components of the Digital Bunker. 1. A basic desktop PC to run and serve our Universal Laser cutter. 2. Two PC towers to replace current out of warranty computers that have several glitch issues due to outdated technologies. 3. One new Stratasys F170 3D Printer The Digital Bunker is in need of a tech “upgrade”. Since integrating 3D printing into the Visual Art and Art History departments curriculum, the 3D printer we currently have is running nonstop. The students are fully engaged with the 3D printing process from start to finish and we are in need of this “next-generation” equipment. The new 3D printing unit is an industry-standard, professional-level printer that goes well beyond the capabilities of personal home-use models. These technological tools, materials, and 3D printer will enhance the learning environment for all Visual Art and Art History students, student clubs, and interdisciplinary research groups, all FAU students can use the technology. This upgrade will produce concrete results so our students can be at the cutting edge of technology. This will not only increase program quality for current students, but will play a significant role in recruiting high quality, digital-age students to the graduate and undergraduate ranks.
