Narrative
Technology Access Aim & Background: The objective of this proposal is to provide an invaluable classroom resource, that will allow faculty and students to engage across multiple FAU campuses, and enable development of computer coding and bioinformatic training programs. Rationale: In 2016, the State University System Support Work Group report limited technology accessibility to students within: (a) rural areas within Florida, (b) low-socioeconomic status students, and (c) students whom their second language is English. Yet, the recognition for the need of computational skills as a prerequisite competency for all fields is a necessity. Proposal: To address this need, a small set of mobile, laptop computers on both the Davie and Jupiter campuses will expand the access to the appropriate types of technology and expand course curriculum in computer-based training. These laptops will allow faculty and students to use the video conferencing rooms in conjunction with the laptops. Access to these courses across campuses will expand course options and convenience for students in completing degrees closer to their home or work locations. The students will have a better educational experience as the faculty can demonstrate how to use the computational skills on a single platform. Further, in conjunction with FAU Jupiter research labs and Max Planck Florida, FAU Jupiter is rapidly expanding course offerings and workshops for scientists of all levels – undergraduate, graduate, and advanced researchers. The proposed mobile laptop carts will allow FAU Jupiter to host Internationally-recognized courses and conferences, and combined use with video-conferencing, will connect FAU students to world-renowned scientists to gain advanced database/bioinformatic training with the most cutting-edge computer-based methods.
