Narrative

The Student-Athlete Center for Academic Excellence (SACAE) serves about 500 student-athletes. The SACAE provides academic support on a daily basis to ensure the resources are available for student success. Resources students have access to are laptops, iPads, and calculators for use in the SACAE, on campus, and for team travel. This proposal requests to replace 10 existing iPads, replace 20 existing laptops, and add 50 new calculators. The updated laptops, iPads, and calculators are requested for students to utilize as an additional component to help with student success. Students spend quite a bit of time at the SACAE, more than 38,000 hours in academic plans in 18-19, which does not include those who use the center on their own time. Students ask regularly for use of portable technology to allow them the flexibility to complete their work whether in the center, their residence, or while traveling for team events. Additionally, many need options to take online exams (tests are not allowed to be taken in the center). This upgrade and access to an additional resource will resolve this issue and provide an enhanced technological capability and experience for students in their daily academic operations. Pursuant to FAU’s Strategic Plan for the Race to Excellence, 2015-2025 and keeping with the university tradition of student success, this request contributes to student success and the implementation of the goals set forth by the university, specifically Vision and Boldness. This request supports FAU’s Vision to provide quality programs (3) as well as the values of excellence, innovation, student success, and a high level of customer service (4). Under the umbrella of Boldness, by providing student-athletes increased access to technology, this will also allow increased access to learning, including eLearning (7). It also directly contributes to the point, “develop athletic programs that achieve success in Conference USA and beyond” (7).
