Narrative

The goal of this proposal is to create a smart classroom that will enhance the
learning experience of students taking photography courses at FAU.

The Department of Visual Arts and Art History has a program that is devoted to offering a

diverse curriculum dedicated to educating artists and art historians. There are more than 700

majors currently enrolled, making it one of the largest art programs in the state of Florida. As our

department grows, so does the photography program.

A new tenure track professor is providing stability and direction, furthering the ability for the area to grow. Renovations on VA 116 were completed in December 2013to include a classroom space, however, smart classroom technology was not budgeted as part of the physical renovations. To fully meet the needs of the photography courses to be scheduled in that space, which include digital presentations by both the professor and students, lectures, viewing images and films smart classroom technology needs to be installed.

The addition of smart classroom technology to VA 116 will turn it into a fully functional and

productive classroom, allowing for more efficient teaching. In addition to serving the needs of

photography students, the space is used by other classes for critique, lab hours, special events

such as artist presentations and photo club meetings. Currently, the photography curriculum

serves BA, BFA, MFA, non-majors and students from a wide variety of areas outside of the Department

of Visual Arts and Art History. Photography is a very popular subject, with many courses

accumulating lengthy wait lists. With the technological tools a smart classroom provides,

additional courses could be held in the VA 116, allowing more students to be served as multiple

photography courses could be held simultaneously.

The photography curriculum requires that students view their images through the most accurate

digital projection possible for pedagogical purposes. The requested LCD projectors provide

superior image quality and increased lumens and contrast ratios that enable better image viewing

in the light conditions caused by mandatory security lights in the classrooms. Blinds are also needed to keep out the bright light that comes through the large windows and doorway. Beyond using the projection system and computer for viewing and critiquing images, students are also required to research and conduct presentations that utilize PowerPoint and Adobe Creative Suite software.

Advances in technology impact all areas of study, but perhaps photography even more so, as it is

a relatively young medium that is inherently tied to technology. Given the strong need for a smart

classroom and the departments goal to stay current with industry standards it is crucial that VA

116 be upgraded to a smart classroom, including all the necessary software and hardware. This

technology will enable the students and professors that utilize the classroom to accurately view

digital photo based imagery, digitally generated lecture material, provide access to internet

resources and other digital media tools.
