Narrative
The FAU Broward Administration is requesting funding from the technology fee to install smart classroom technology in a new classroom on the 10th floor, room 1009 of the HEC building, Fort Lauderdale campus. The technology requested includes a ceiling mounted 4K projector, screen, smart podium monitor and presenter’s lectern. FAU’s Fort Lauderdale campus is becoming the design and creative industry focus campus. The School of Architecture has anchored this campus for many years. A core group of film, video and new media faculty recently relocated to this campus and are offering undergraduate and graduate classes downtown. Graphic design is positioned to start offering classes on the downtown campus summer 2021. This new computer lab classroom is needed to accommodate the increase in course scheduling and enrollment growth for the downtown campus. The classroom will be fully utilized approximately 40 hours per week for courses taught in Architecture; Graphic Design; and Film, Video and New Media. Combined these programs currently serve between just under 500 undergraduate and graduate students. Enrollment is expected to increase from new articulation agreements with Miami-Dade College specifically for these programs and the service of the Brightline into the downtown area.
Facilities
We are working with FAU Design and Construction on structural renovations of the space and the project (P-8171) has been approved at the provost and president level. A budget for the structural renovations is in place, however the existing project budget does not include the technology component which we are requesting in this tech fee proposal.
Hardware Requirements
The technology requested includes a ceiling mounted 4K projector, screen, smart podium monitor and presenter’s lectern.
Software Requirements
The three academic programs that will be using the classroom will provide computers and specialized software licenses needed for students to participate in programming offered within the space.
Other Costs
None anticipated.
Timeline
The goal is to complete this project along the same timeline as the structural renovations currently approved for this classroom space--the estimated project end date for project P-8171 is early May of 2021.
Sustainability
Broward Computing Services will be responsible for maintaining the system.
Resource Matching
The three academic programs that will be using the classroom will provide computers and specialized software licenses needed for students to participate in programming offered within the space.
Implementing Organization
Broward OIT will implement this project in partnership with Broward Administration.
