Narrative
This proposal represents a collaborative effort between the College of Medicine (COM) and Office of Information Technology with support from University Libraries. Advances come from the dissemination of research and scholarship through publication of scientific articles, essays, or books that facilitate the exchange of new knowledge and implementation into evidence-based practices. Currently, faculty scholarly records are compiled manually and often are outdated or inaccurate. We propose to develop and implement a process for automated retrieval and display of publication records which will provide more accurate information for real time tracking and supports FAU’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities. Boldness. This new integral resource will benefit both future and current FAU undergraduate and graduate students. In one easily accessible FAU website, students will be able to learn about faculty research interests and have access to each faculty members’ complete publication record for further exploration. Brand & Place. This website will be highly discoverable increasing FAU’s visibility and opportunity for engagement. Brown University reports over half a million visitors and 2 million pageviews a year using the same platform. Synergy. This platform will aid in the grant submissions process, specifically large program projects which requires the compilation of publication records for multiple faculty. This resource can also be used for annual performance and promotion and tenure reviews. Quality & Strategy. Wise and innovative allocation of resources. We propose this project as a proof of concept with the COM. However, this Web of Science Expanded API will be available to all FAU colleges and departments as it will be associated with the University Library subscription. Of note, FIU has utilized their student funded technology fee grant to successfully fund the implementation of the same platform with a commercial provider.

Hardware Requirements
Hardware will be provided in the form of three Azure instances, two for web processing and one for SQL. These will be hosted in Microsoft Azure with other services provided by the Research Computing team at Florida Atlantic University.
Software Requirements
Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science Expanded API and VIVO open-source software The University Library currently subscribes to the Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science™ (WOS). The WOS is the largest index of multiple databases that provides comprehensive publication and citation data for over 250 science, social science, arts, and humanities disciplines. Citations represent full-text articles, reviews, editorials, chronologies, abstracts, conference proceedings and technical papers. The WOS Expanded API will provide automated retrieval of complete publication records for FAU faculty, staff and students. We propose to develop an automated retrieval process for capturing complete publication records for FAU faculty, staff and students by deploying the WOS Expanded API in conjunction with VIVO, an open-source software for storing and displaying publication and citation data in a template with clear data visualization and search functionality.
Personnel Costs
We request OPS personnel costs for deployment in year 1 and maintenance support in years 2 and 3 ($10,000/yr). The College of Medicine, Office of Information Technology and University Library will provide effort from existing FTE.
Other Costs
Yearly Cloud Hosting Costs: Virtual Machine: $700 MySQL Database: $700 Backups: $1,100 Yearly - Web of Science expanded API: $5000
Timeline
0 – 30 days: Hire qualified part-time OPS employee 30 – 90 days: Purchase enhanced Web of Science API Setup Vivo Azure instances and SQL server 90 – 180 days: Integration of Vivo with Web of Science and demonstration with select published students and faculty 180 – 365 days: Offer forms for students and faculty to opt into Vivo 365 days+: Collect statistics showing utilization Enroll select faculty and graduate and undergraduate students from other colleges Maintenance mode
Sustainability
We anticipate showcasing this platform within the first year of deployment and expect to garner interest from other colleges and units within the university in the second and third years. Future funding maybe supported by central university offices or via multiple stakeholder cost-sharing.
