Narrative
The Sandler School of Social Work desires to use simulated learning through an online platform (Kognito) currently being used in public schools, higher education (including FAU), healthcare, and non-profit industries. Kognito uses a behavior change model which integrates evidence-based models and techniques, game mechanics, and learning principles. In simulations, students enter a virtual environment and engage in role-play conversations with emotionally responsive virtual humans. Through practice and receiving personalized feedback, users learn and assess their competency. Students will develop critical thinking, assessment, and engagement competencies in a safe learning environment.
All MSW students must participate in a 600-hour internship in the community, in a variety of settings including schools, substance abuse treatment centers, homeless shelters, hospitals, community mental health centers, and the VA. For many students, internships are the first time they are interacting with clients. While students have the classroom knowledge, they often lack experience and confidence resulting in increased anxiety. A simulated learning experience will allow students to practice and increase their skills and confidence, in a platform that reduces stress/anxiety and allows for immediate supervision and feedback from their professors and instructors.
Technology can enhance students’ skills as social workers. The use of simulated learning will allow the ability to train students in innovative practices while reducing stress and increasing confidence and competence, thus enhancing the FAU “brand” by creating interactive and engaging learning experiences. Perhaps more importantly, this aligns with the Strategic Plan goal of improving “Quality” by using technology to improve the quality of our students’ experience with their courses, internships, and better prepare them to compete in a marketplace that depends more and more on effective use of technology.
Timeline
Once the software is purchased, it is active for one year. Thus, all MSW students will have access to the simulations for that year while they prepare for advanced clinical practice.
Sustainability
Over the next year, the School were explore opportunities to provide this simulation through other fees and fundraising. Also, we are exploring additional simulations that can be utilized in the College's simulation lab.
Implementing Organization
The Sandler School of Social Work will implement the project through various courses.
