Narrative
his proposal will replace two software packages called Visi-pitch (VP) and two computers that are no longer functioning. This program allows speech-language pathologists to record and visualize measures of a person’s voice. VP provides visual information on the screen related to voice. The Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) program requires a course of all graduate students in the area of voice disorders. The VP is used in this course and also in the FAU Communication Disorders Clinic (CDC) where graduate students provide speech/voice evaluations and treatment to the community. The FAU CDC treats children and adults with voice disorders and the VP is frequently used with these clients. This software is used for clients with voice/speech disorders and for accent modification.
Students, faculty, and clients will benefit from updated versions of this useful software. Students will benefit in classroom instruction as well as in working with clients in the clinic. Faculty who instruct in these areas use the software in lectures for required graduate courses. Having current instrumentation will allow the program to support the BOLDNESS initiative on FAU’s strategic plan, by allowing our program to attract students to the program who are interested in the latest technology in the field. The SYNERGY initiative in the strategic plan will be supported related to recruiting and retaining high quality faculty members. Our department is currently searching for two faculty positions, both are likely to use this software in research and instruction. Our program is accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation in Speech Pathology and is scheduled for a site visit in the Spring semester of 2023; replacing the nonfunctioning equipment with the latest equipment is necessary. Based on clients and research participants who will benefit from use of the VP, the healthy aging and neuroscience pillars of FAU will be supported through this software and computer purchase.
