Narrative
The new CODAT signature program in Ft. Lauderdale focuses on design in Architecture, Graphic Design and Multimedia Studies. The CODAT team is strategizing how to provide more robust equipment to train their students in the newest workforce interfaces, and ultimately plans to enhance technology in other shared spaces. For Architecture and Multimedia Studies courses, there is a need for more robust computing and large monitors for the design courses. HEC 608 is the largest computer classroom space managed by FAU OIT in the building. The CODAT team decided with OIT that utilizing the largest computer classroom to this effect made the most practical and immediate improvement to the tech conditions at the facility to the benefit of the students. 400+ majors currently attend these programs and it is likely that many of them will have classes in this room during their degree. The equipment upgrades in this proposal target the student interface selected by the design faculty in order to effectively teach several of their required design courses. The monitors are purposefully larger in size and have the necessary specs for intricate design layouts required for the work the students are expected to encounter in the classroom. Laptop computers are insufficient in screen size and cannot capture the type of visuals produced in these classes, so this space needs every computer station included in the proposal. OIT has committed $65,268.28 for the AV upgrade in the room. Multimedia Studies is contributing $33,200 towards the cost of the computers. College of Arts and Letters is contributing $6305 for furniture. Additional expenditures are needed to reorient the room to accommodate more capacity. More details about resource matching are included in that section.
Facilities
Minor renovation of the room to reorient the location of the displays and possible rearranging of electric and network. New window coverings needed because of glare. We were not able to complete a minor project request regarding the renovation, but based on similar renovations last year in the building, Ft. Lauderdale OIT estimated $20,000 for this type of work.
Hardware Requirements
This proposal includes an attachment describing all the equipment and specs of the computers, monitors, AV equipment, desks and supporting materials. The grant request is for the computers, monitors and supporting room upgrades. AV equipment is not listed here as OIT is acquiring, but details are listed in the supporting documents section. 26 Dell Precision 3650 Tower $74,750 26 Dell UltraSharp 27 Monitor--U2722D, 27" $9,360
Software Requirements
Software will be supported by Arts and Letters
Personnel Costs
At this time it is expected that this room continue to be supervised and maintained by OIT.
Other Costs
Window treatments to reduce glare Building cost associated with reorienting the room and installing electrical and data as needed Estimated at $20,000, based on recent projects in the building. No official estimate available to submit.
Timeline
Given the time lag for equipment, earliest installation is expected Summer 2022, though it is hoped for completion for Fall 2022.
Sustainability
This is an OIT classroom, it is assumed that OIT will provide technical support, and one of the OIT staff has a window that views the room, which is very helpful to users in order to support this more nuanced computer lab layout.
Resource Matching
The total expected cost of the room renovation is $160,162.54 as per attached estimate and equipment data sheets. Resource matching totals as below=$104,773.28: -OIT has committed $65,268.28 for the AV upgrade in the room. -Multimedia Studies is contributing $33,200 towards the cost of the computers. -College of Arts and Letters is contributing $6305 for furniture.
Implementing Organization
OIT is supervising the project, with Arts and Letters oversight regarding appropriate review of replacement technologies in the event the materials in this proposal become unavailable.
