Narrative
The State of Florida, and FAU are emphasizing the importance of career readiness more each year. The School of Communication and Multimedia Studies (SCMS) serves approximately 1500 majors, and has approximately 3,800 students enrolled per year in our undergraduate and graduate courses. Currently, we can only communicate important events to our students with email and social media, and occasionally flyers posted throughout the Culture and Society Building. Consistent feedback given to us is that students do not have easy access to finding out about special events, study abroad opportunities, and importantly, internships. Although we have 1,500 students, less than 200 students completed internships in the past few years, even pre-Covid (F’18=67, S’19-72, Su ‘19=48). The Career Center posted 2,385 internships during that period. Students have indicated that they want a “communication and media focused” dissemination. Although we do our best to disseminate relevant opportunities, it is not always efficient or timely. We are requesting tech fees to provide computer screens/displays to share relevant information with our students, and give them on clear, central place to come for information. Internships area a large piece of this (one dedicated screen), and the other is sharing information for Capstone classes, promoting special events, highlighting student successes, promoting and coordinating student clubs and groups like the honors society, film club, journalism club, etc.
Facilities
We will need electrical and computer renovations on the two walls with our displays.
Hardware Requirements
We are seeking two 4K computer monitors that can be programmed to promote internships and events to help support student career readiness.
Software Requirements
Existing University Software
Personnel Costs
Two quotes (attached but being updated) detail the needs for computer and electrical upgrades to install the screens outside of the SCMS offices.
Other Costs
None
Timeline
We would order the screens as soon as Fall 2022 begins and have them up and running by December 2022.
Sustainability
Once ordered, these should be good for 5-7 years and can be controlled by the SCMS program assistant, internship coordinator and School director.
Resource Matching
none
Implementing Organization
SCMS
