Narrative
Spatial Computing, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality -- these are the various terms used to describe the emerging area of critical importance that needs well trained engineers and developers. The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is beginning to develop capacity in the area of critical importance. With limited equipment donations from Magic Leap and one HoloLense2 headset that was purchased for a senior design project, the Department has begun introducing Spatial Computing in senior design projects. With this experience we plan to begin offering courses and need equipment to support this critical technology area.
The following senior design Projects have been offered in the last three semesters:
Fitness Training and Tracking
Industry partner: Traq Global (TRAZER)
Net-C AR Training with Haptic Feedback Glove
Industry Partner: US Navy
AR in Education
Industry Partner: PeakActivity Inc
OSHA Hazard Detection
Industry Partner: PeakActivity Inc
Hardware Requirements
We request budget to purchase 20 AR/VR headsets. We plan to purchase 10 HoloLense2 devices and 10 MagicLeap 2 devices. MagicLeap 2 devices are expected to be available in late 2022.
HoloLense 2 headsets are priced at $2,975 each, $29,750 for 10
MagicLeap 2 headsets are expected be similarly priced, , $29,750 for 10
4 Workstations for use with these devices priced at $2,000 per workstation and $250 for keyboard and monitor, $9,000
