Narrative
In order to meet the needs and enhance the learning experience of visual arts students it is time to update the technology in the AH 206 digital classroom lab. This proposal is to update the iMacs (last replaced in 2017), 17" printers (last replaced in 2016), scanners (last replaced in 2016) , 24" printer (last replaced in 2014) and smart classroom A/V equipment (last replaced in 2012). The number of students that will benefit from the update will be substantial as in addition to classes AH 206 also serves as an open computer lab for all Visual Arts and Art History students with designated hours each semester.
The digital photography and art courses that meet in the space conduct visual presentations and view high resolution images making updating the technology essential to maintaining a productive classroom. Students need to view their works through the most accurate digital projection possible for pedagogical purposes and growth as photographers and artists. The current computers are now outdated and out of warranty. Some have started to fail and have a difficult time running the up-to-date Adobe Creative Cloud software used in all of our classes. AH 206 is typically a heavily used room housing between 4-6 courses each semester. As a temporary fix this year, we reduced the number of photo courses offered and moved the majority of the photo courses online or to mixed modality. This not a sustainable solution and once the updates occur the lab will return to supporting 8-12 courses per year, along with open lab hours. During open lab hours students often utilize the computers, printers, and scanners to complete their class projects and print artwork for the BFA and MFA exhibitions. The proposed updates will enable AH 206 to be a high functioning digital lab classroom that aligns with industry standards.
