Narrative
The purpose of this project is to • update the computers in GS207 (the SAM Lab) • update the computers in GS211 (the MLC) • purchase Surface Pens The SAM Lab, run by the Math Learning Center (MLC), has seen a 112% increase in student usage comparing the first 8 weeks of Fall 21 (350 visits) to the first 8 weeks of Fall 22 (743 visits by 202 unique students). SAM Lab provides drop-in tutoring for all Methods of Calculus (MAC2233) students. This course has an online homework system, making the functionality of the 37 desktop computers, which has been steadily declining and requiring maintenance, is of utmost importance in being able to provide timely academic support to these students. MAC2233 is the largest undergraduate math course at FAU; 4,851 enrolled students from Summer 21 – Fall 22. We request to replace/upgrade the 37 computers, allowing optimal academic support to students attending the SAM lab. The Math Learning Center (MLC) has seen an 81% increase in student usage comparing the first 8 weeks of Fall 21 (1,626 visits) to the first 8 weeks of Fall 22 (2,956 visits by 674 unique students). MLC provides drop-in tutoring for ALL undergraduate math courses. Many math courses have online homework and require the use of a computer at the MLC. We request to replace/upgrade the 24 computers in the MLC, allowing us to better support students. At almost 3,000 visits in 8 weeks, we expect over 6,000 visits by about 1400 unique students by the end of the term. MLC provides online tutoring, using Surface devices, for many lower-level math courses. We are requesting 10 additional Microsoft Surface pens as these tend to need replacing after continued use. MLC supports about 750 visits per semester to online tutoring. Total Request: 61 Computers for both SAM and MLC: $64,348.80 10 Microsoft Surface Pens $319.90 Total: $64,668.70
