Narrative
During 2021-2022, The Student-Athlete Success Center (SASC) offered nearly 17,000 hours of academic support to the student-athlete population, including weekly advising meetings, learning specialist meetings, study skill and time management building, individual and group tutoring, mentoring, and learning assistant support. Additional support includes life skills programming, assistance connecting with other offices on campus, and independent and team study halls in the computer labs. SASC is requesting to update student desktop computers located within the office spaces of the SASC. Much of the support provided takes place within staff offices on separate student computers. The current student computers in place, previously provided through the tech fee in 2015, have lasted two years beyond the expected timeline of five years. At this time, they are no longer functioning properly, and in order to continue to assist in student-athlete’s academic success need to be replaced rather than repaired, per the recommendation of an OIT representative. While student-athletes do have access to computer labs, the purpose of the requested computers is to provide students a confidential and quiet space for one-on-one appointments not available in a computer lab, particularly for students with disabilities, who receive regular targeted, individual support. Further, as recruiting patterns have changed in recent years and FAU is moving to the AAC, there has been a greater need for increased academic support for student-athletes each year. Thus, these computers have proven to be essential in the academic success of the student-athlete population while contributing to a timely graduation and FAU’s Strategic Plan. Thank you for your consideration.
