Narrative
In the classroom it is not easy to “visualize” how the eye and ear work. We have models, do dissections, use eye charts and tuning forks but, that only tells us so much. What if we had models connected to a computer interface that will let us see the action potentials generated by the eye and the ear based on what colors are “seeing” and what sounds are “hearing”? We could!
The Neuro model: Eye and Ear system from iWorx is an accessory package that would be a great addition to the laboratory courses that use this teaching tool by enhancing the learning experience and providing hands on activities that keep the students engaged.
Students learn in a lab setting through hands on, experiential learning activities. It is the best way to grasp concepts and retain them. The Department of Biological Sciences uses the iWorx systems to teach physiology in Anatomy and Physiology, Human Morphology and Function and in Comparative Animal Physiology. iWorx provides a full range of advanced hardware and software tools for physiology teaching. It is currently used for hands on experience in muscle physiology (electromyograms), nervous system physiology (game show physiology), heart physiology (electrocardiograms) and lung physiology (spirometry). Adding the Neuro model: Eye and Ear system would cover an area of physiology with a learning tool that was not available before.

The total cost of the purchase of nine (9) Neuro model: Eye and Ear Systems would be $9,092. This would be for 4 iWorx systems currently at the Boca campus and 5 currently at the Davie campus.
The iWorx company provides the necessary data analysis software (Labscribe) and updates for free and, the lab exercises.
It is an investment that goes a long way with potentially impacting at least 1000 students annually between the Davie and Boca campuses Biology lab classrooms.
