The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is requesting an upgrade to the video- conferencing equipment in the department’s seminar room PS 226. The room is used to conduct daily meetings and seminars as well as undergraduate and graduate research presentations. The seminar room is also used by the Dean of the College of Science and various faculty from other departments at Boca and other campuses. In total, our seminar facilities service over 90 graduate and undergraduate students along with faculty per week.

The current equipment in the room was purchased six years ago and is outdated. As a result there are issues with the image quality during video conferencing, loss of connection and compatibility issues with laptops, especially Apple products. An upgrade of the equipment would correct these problems.

Currently, the Department of Chemistry has 300 undergraduate and 30 graduate students. Our weekly departmental seminar, which is video-conferenced to the Torrey Pines Institute as well as the Jupiter and Harbor Branch campuses exposes, our students to world class researchers form both academia and industry. This is important in the intellectual development of students. The Department also broadcasts thesis defense seminars and graduate committee meetings, as most of our students have at least one faculty committee member located off site.

Our degree programs involves collaboration with other FAU campuses as well as with Scripps Florida and the Torrey Pines Institute. As a result, many of our graduate and undergraduate students will conduct research on other campuses. The upgrade would better enable faculty supervisors to have meetings with their research students via videoconferencing with other facilities.

In conclusion, an upgrade of the videoconferencing equipment would better enable the Department to service both undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty.
