Narrative
Using tech fee funds from 2013 the College of Engineering and Computer Science was able to add additional server resources to our Cloud based infrastructure to support “any time”, ”anywhere” access to our cloud based desktops.  Both Engineering and non-Engineering students can now access these cloud desktops from the majority of mobile devices that are available and standard PCs and laptops.

Our current license allows for up to 330 students concurrently.  This license is now reaching its threshold due to the popularity both within engineering and non-engineering students. We are at point where we need to add 200 more VMware licenses to support the growth of the Engineering Cloud.  This would bring our total count to 530 licenses and would be good for 3 years.  Purchasing a 3 year license as a single order rather than individually as 3 separate orders annually will save us approximately $15,000 (20%)

The expansion of the College of Engineering & Computer Science’s Cloud based infrastructure enriches the educational experience by allowing students to access software remotely.  They no longer have to come on campus to access computer labs.  Students can now work remotely from home.  The expansion of the VMware licenses will expand our undergraduate programs as our students have varied schedules and making the compute resources available to them from anywhere and anytime will accommodate this and help ensure our students are successful.
