FAU Libraries’ proposes the digitization of FAU’s legacy thesis and dissertation collection (1967-2009) in order to create a complete open access digital archive of all FAU theses and dissertations. The creation of a comprehensive digital archive would enable access FAU theses and dissertations to a broad audience and provide for the long-term preservation of this important FAU collection. A complete digital archive would showcase the works of FAU alumni and contribute toward a sense of community that would strengthen and promote the FAU brand.
For a university the publishing of its theses and dissertations represents tangible evidence of graduate student success and showcases the scholarship born departments and colleges. Since electronic theses and dissertation submissions were mandated in 2009 more than 1100 current theses and dissertations have been made available in the FAU Libraries’ open access repository. These current ETDs have been accessed by more than 82,000 viewers worldwide. This year alone the current ETD collection was accessed over 27,000 times. However, these current, digitally-born theses and dissertations represent only a portion, some 20%, of all theses and dissertations ever produced at FAU. With funding for digitization FAU’s legacy theses and dissertations, those created during 1967-2006, could be made available open access and contribute to a complete digital archive of all FAU theses and dissertations (1967 to current). The already highly used collection would increase in volume by 500%. Digitization of FAU’s print theses and dissertations collection would also include the submission of digitized files and metadata to the statewide Florida Digital Archive, a dark archive (no public access) which guarantees long-term format migration as a preservation strategy and serves as a remote storage archive for worst case scenarios.
This project will greatly enhance access and discoverability of more than 3 decades of research produced by FAU students. It will serve not only as a collection of educational resources to enhance curriculum as an instructional technology resource for research and creative projects. This project will add more than 4,000 theses and dissertations to an online collection that is accessed on average more than 500 times every week at FAU Libraries.
