Narrative

The two most successful and in-demand degree programs offered by the Department of Music are Commercial Music and Music Education.  Students in these two programs form over 2/3rds of the Department of Music, which, for the 2014-2015 academic school year, totals 203 students. Additionally, there are 80 students from other majors across the university this year that are seeking a minor in Commercial Music. These two disciplines rely heavily on music technology, both in the classroom and in the workplace, and it is indispensable that our students are trained on and have extensive access to the tools of their trade.

The proposed lab consists of two rooms (AH-109 and AH-117) and are both located in the Arts and Humanities building. The combined rooms would be able to hold thirty students and would be linked through a local network (for minimum lag time) with the possibility of connecting to the FAU network (if needed). The idea behind networking these two rooms stems from the reality that students and faculty alike need to effectively address musical education and collaboration over the Internet. Traditional distance learning classrooms are inadequate for this purpose since they lack the software and hardware used by musicians.

The benefits of this new lab are:

1.)  Increased access for students to music technology/software for students

2.)  Increase course capacity to address the growth of both Music Education and Commercial Music program.

This new lab would be used for both classroom instruction and for off-hours use by students to complete coursework that requires this technology. Existing courses that would be taught in this lab are Sound Recording I, Sound Recording II, and Computer Music Sequencing. Other courses that would require access to this lab to complete coursework are Music For Radio and TV Commercials, Film Scoring, Music Production, Live Sound Reinforcement and Commercial Music Forum. The lab is created, there are two new courses that are being proposed: Introduction to Music Technology and Electronic Music Production.

The lab shall contain the leading music production, notation and education software programs as well as the hardware required to support it.
