Narrative
The Department of History is applying for a tech fee grant in the amount of $42,000 to equip the department's seminar room, AH 105 (building 52) as a HYFlex classroom. This room hosts 11 graduate courses in a typical year (capping at 18 students per class). Though the courses offered in the AH 105 seminar room primarily serve History MA students, they also enroll Comparative Studies PhD students, for whom seats are reserved, as well as MA students from other disciplinary backgrounds. Conversion to HyFlex would enhance the learning experience for graduate students in a number of ways: 1. It would enable History faculty to offer synchronous hybrid graduate courses. There is strong demand for such courses, particularly in the summer when many graduate students do not remain in the Boca Raton area. HyFlex capability will therefore facilitate degree completion and reduce time-to-degree. It may also increase enrollment in the MA program, as students who are unable to attend classes on the Boca Raton campus are not at present able to enroll in the graduate program. Asynchronous online courses are not suitable for History graduate work, and the History faculty currently has limited access to existing HyFlex space on campus. At present, consequently, History graduate courses are offered exclusively in person. 2. It would enable History faculty to enrich existing course content. 2a. HyFlex will enable faculty to use their academic networks to hold "meet the author" events as part of their graduate courses, during which graduate students will have the ability to learn from distinguished historians from around the country and the world, who can "Zoom" in to discuss their work. 2b. It will enhance digital, public, and oral history graduate courses by enabling instructors to access online materials in real time with their students.
