Narrative
The 15 outdated computers (2019) in our research hub need to be upgraded in order to run the latest versions of analytical data software (nVivo, Atlas.TI, R, Stata, SPSS, etc.) required for quantitative and qualitative research. The Sociology dept. teaches quantitative and qualitative research methods courses to both undergrad and grad students every semester. In fact, a methods course is required to graduate in many of the majors in the College of Arts & Letters, and we encourage other departments to use our research hub. The upgrade will further the following goals: promote student success in research courses, allow students the hands-on practice and experience needed with various research software; encourage student engagement in independent research projects, encourage further grad/undergrad student involvement with faculty research projects; serve as a location for peer mentoring and tutoring in data analysis by GTAs; develop a training hub for faculty, MA, PhD Comparative Studies students, and undergrad, in computer applications to enhance research and methodological training.
