Narrative
The Tech Fee initiative by FAU Libraries' Special Collections aims to boost education through an innovative listening/visual portal. This portal will offer expanded access to previously restricted collections, enabling students and faculty to explore materials at their convenience, even outside regular office hours. The inspiration for this initiative comes from renowned institutions such as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Grammy Museum, and 9/11 Museum, and it will present a curated selection of books and artifacts to spark interest.
The portal will receive regular updates with new items each semester and will be strategically placed in high-traffic student areas. According to ACRL 2021-2022 statistics, 1,643 students engaged with Special Collections for instruction. However, this device has the potential to reach the 30,000 students attending the university who may not visit Special Collections regularly.
The educational benefits of this initiative include:
Showcasing Hidden Treasures: The portal will make Special Collections materials from areas like Jaffe, Special Collections Main, and Recorded Sound Archives accessible to a broader audience. These resources, often limited to office hours or appointments, will become visible, promoting deeper engagement with the library among students and faculty.
Exhibition Access: The portal will host both current and past exhibitions, allowing individuals to explore the rich history and culture represented in these displays. This feature benefits those unable to visit during exhibition hours, extending the life of these exhibitions.
Interactive Learning: The portal's interactive elements will encourage students to delve deeper into the collections. It will facilitate opportunities for them to learn more about the holdings and connect with experts in Special Collections, fostering intellectual curiosity and supporting their research needs.
