Narrative
The education benefit of this proposal is a Graphic Design degree program that produces competitive students capable of professional-level presentation and the knowledge to shape future interfaces. Technology plays a critical role in Graphic Design education and practice. It is essential for us to provide access to equipment to ensure that portfolios are professional quality and that our students enter the workplace with relevant skills. The Ft Lauderdale Graphic Design program hosts both BFA and MFA students. There are currently 256 students enrolled in Graphic Design courses with 75 Graphic Design majors who passed Portfolio Review as of Fall 2023. We also offer elective courses, including photography, that support students from any major. BFA and MFA Graphic Design students host capstone exhibitions for industry professionals. These require equipment to display their work. This tech fee supports student efforts towards competitively pursuing employment in the profession after graduation. Graphic Design provides a resource room, overseen by graduate students, to provide secure access to technology and tools. Included in the room is a photography studio with equipment used to support elective courses and to document student work to professional standards. Our current inventory includes a fleet of depreciating cameras. This proposal requests new cameras with updated technology and lenses to supplement the current inventory. Designers find themselves constantly adapting to new technology that requires interface expertise. The market is anxiously preparing for the arrival of the Apple Vision Pro which is expected to create a wave of impact in the market through the implementation of spatial operating systems. Our students need to be prepared to design AR/VR interfaces and experiences. In support of this, the program requests 4 apple vision pro google headsets to support the BFA and MFA curriculum.
