Narrative
This proposal seeks to expand the creative potential of the department’s Sculpture Studio at the Boca Raton campus by replacing our broken uPrint SE with a new Stratasys J-35. Incorporating this machine into our “Digital Bunker” will expand the potential for artistic creation, interdisciplinary research, and job training for our students. Every student in the Department of Visual Art & Art History will have access to this 3D printer during their time at FAU and will directly be incorporated into the 3D Art Fundamentals course, a part of our core course requirements, and in all sculpture classes, as well as through interdisciplinary research and student clubs.
The funds requested will bring the sculpture facilities to the cutting edge of modern 3D printing technology with the acquisition of a Stratasys J-35, which expands our 3D printing capacity to include a more diverse material list from soft rubbers to printable resins. This will not only increase program quality for current students but will play a significant role in recruiting high-quality, digital-age students to the graduate and undergraduate ranks.
While the unit will be established in the sculpture area of the facility, they are intended to serve a variety of disciplines within the department and to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration and research. This intent extends beyond the areas of the fine arts, to fields such as design, architecture, and engineering in accordance with the S.T.E.A.M. signature theme of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters strategic plan.
The J-35 is an industry-standard, professional-level printer that goes well beyond the capabilities of personal home-use models in terms of materials and ease of usage. They are used in a wide range of industries for rapid prototyping and modeling and in our classes and research, bridge the gap between traditional and emerging modes of conceptualizing, collaborating, and creating.
Facilities
No additional facility upgrades or renovations are required as we already have a dedicated 3D printing room within the sculpture studio that has all the required facilities needs including HVAC and electricity.
