Narrative

Since 2020, I have been developing the STEAM lab with regards to training pre-service teachers through courses in art education, specifically in ARE 4313 and ARE 4240. These courses focus on elementary and secondary methods in art education. The STEAM infused learning curriculum encourages FAU students to engage with their future k-12 grade students using STEM activities that allow for creativity and visual art. To further expand this initiative and address the ever-changing landscape of technology infused education, I am proposing the use of robots, which have been popular with FAU students and K-12 children and the inclusion of 3D printing experiences. The benefits of including these STEAM experiences for FAU students involve not only training to use the equipment for their own knowledge, but also to encourage their use of technology infused pedagogy with children. These experiences support FAU students by increasing their knowledge of STEAM lesson plans and how to teach these types of lessons to young children. As an FAU professor my professional development is also enhanced by learning how to integrate technology with visual art in my own courses.

The hardware for this proposal includes: 3D printer, 3D monofilament, power surge protection strips, programmable educational robots, and flashdrives.

Timeline

Spring Semester 2024 after funding is available, I will order the hardware, approximately by February. March 2024, I will receive hardware and train myself on using the new equipment. FAU students will engage with the hardware through the coursework in ARE 4313 and ARE 4240. FAU students will have educational experiences utilizing the hardware and training on how to infuse the equipment into lessons for K-12 children will occur. FAU students will design lesson plans that infuse STEAM with the new hardware, which will be completed in April 2024. During Summer terms 2 and 3, FAU students enrolled in ARE 4313 will have a similar experience with the hardware to design STEAM lesson plans for K-5 students. During the Fall 24 semester, FAU students enrolled in ARE 4313 and ARE 4240 will have a similar experience with the hardware to design STEAM lesson plans for K-12 students. For the purposes of this grant the project end date will be December 2024 at the end of the Fall 24 semester. It is important to note that STEAM lesson development will continue in future semesters as long as hardware is in working condition.

Sustainability

The initial project period of 1 year until December 2024 (the end of the fall semester) is a deadline for this proposal. The actual work with FAU students using the hardware and integrating STEAM lessons designed for K-12 students can continue for future semesters. I intend to continue to integrate STEAM into the art education courses by using the hardware as long as it is functioning.
