Narrative
As computer automation, Artificial Intelligence, and Augmented Reality systems continue to be paradigm disruptors in technology industries, the same is happening in the world of live stage performance. This proposal purchases the equipment necessary to operate the Follow-Me system. This system is designed to control and move an unlimited number of moving light fixtures to up to six performers on the stage simultaneously through one to two operators in real time. The grant seeks funding for the physical networking equipment and cabling to interconnect the system, specialized cameras in the space to capture the 3D environment and movement of performers on the stage for computer input, dedicated computer processing equipment for camera imagery processing and to output real-time control of the equipment. We target the University Theatre space for this project as it has become a principal performance and classroom training space for Music Performance, Commercial Music, Theatre, Dance, and Musical Theatre. Traditionally, we only think of theatre spaces for public exhibitions, such as in a space such as the University Theatre. Many Department of Music and Department of Theatre and Dance classes are taught in these spaces as they provide firsthand experience working in an actual production environment versus a laboratory simulation of a theatre space. Keeping spaces such as these equipped with the latest technology and equipment affords not only public exhibition experience, but also classroom experience in using the same equipment. By providing funding for the augmented lighting system upgrades to the University Theatre, many students will have their classroom and laboratory experiences greatly enhanced by increasing instructional time, access to equipment that will be worked with once employed, and improve the quality of materials presented to the audiences who are a critical component of the laboratory experience for students in classes.
Facilities
No Upgrades are necessary.
Hardware Requirements
The designed system will not use FAU Networks and must use its own proprietary network topology for communication. This topology runs on top of standard network infrastructure but should not be used on existing communication systems as it would saturate the network.
Software Requirements
Not applicable.
Personnel Costs
Not Applicable.
Other Costs
Equipment to be purchased includes: Follow me 6 person tracking computer server and interface. Cameras for computer vision interface. Interconnect cables for system. Fixtures to spot and track performers.
Timeline
Spring 2024 Purchase of equipment Summer 2024 Installation of initial equipment for use during Multiple Theatre and Dance/Music productions during the summer semester.
Sustainability
The system will be actively supported by the Commercial Music Program, Musical Theatre Training Program, Theatre and Dance, and Music Programs. Each program teaches students install, use, and maintenance of this equipment.
Resource Matching
Not Applicable.
Implementing Organization
Department of Theatre and Dance
