Narrative

The Center for Environmental Studies (CES) seeks funding to complement and build upon current audiovisual equipment to form the CES Media Center. This equipment will be used for science communication and dedicated to working with students on environmental projects for the Center for Environmental Studies, "The Invading Sea" (TIS) website with media partners across Florida, and for collaborations with the School of Communication & Multimedia Studies (SCMS) and its new media production studio. The CES Media Center will serve as a hub between the Davie, Boca, and Broward campuses for students and faculty, with a goal of encouraging more student participation and activity to our Davie West Building and Davie campus by shaping and disseminating public messages about the environment, research by FAU faculty, and other initiatives. The CES Media Center will be the official home of the CES "Home and High Water" podcast, the launching location for the TIS climate migration and climate change video series, and a space for other educational efforts with undergraduate and graduate students. Additionally, the CES Media Center will be open to non-environment-related students to use at low or no fee to assist in the creation of content for classes, research, and community engagement.

Facilities

This request comes as CES is engaging in more media-connected and -inspired efforts in research, teaching, and engagement by developing the CES Media Center. The Media Center will be housed within the CES offices, making it a hub for students and faculty to connect with other facilities being established with CES partners at the Boca campus, such as the SCMS new media production studio.

We currently use standard preinstalled software.

Personnel Costs

Faculty from CES and partners at the School of Communication and Multimedia Studies (SCMS), graduate students and CES production staff manage equipment resources.

Other Costs

There are none at this time, though we are aware of expected future maintenance costs we will incur.

Sustainability

Continued maintenance of digital resources and computer hardware comes from trained faculty, graduate students, and production support staff, including in the School of Communication and Multimedia Studies (SCMS).

Resource Matching

CES sees this equipment and the ability to produce high-quality, student-engaged media surrounding podcasts, “The Invading Sea” (TIS), and other collaborations as a way to seek additional funds and engagement to create sustainable growth.
