The purchase of a new LED smart screen TV would allow the center to repurpose the existing nine year old flat screen TV and install it in our recruiting reception area which will also serve as a small seminar room. The addition of the existing TV to the small seminar room would assist in the fluid delivery of course content for the SLS 1301 Career & Life Planning course (which is a new requirement for undeclared FTIC and transfers without an AA degree), serve as a debriefing seminar space for the internships/Co-op students, provide students and employers with a method for delivering presentations and provide the Career Development Center additional seminar space for workshops that require technology.
Ideally, the Career Development Center is a key resource in facilitating student’s choice of major to enroll at FAU and the TV’s will greatly enhance our marketing and visibility of majors and career resources to recruit prospective students. The newly purchased TV would be located in the front reception area which serves as a welcoming space for a students, alumni, prospective visitors and employers. Our reception area functions as a welcome center for the entire FAU student community.
Last year we had over 17,00 student points of contact through the Boca Raton Career Development Center which includes participation in same day career advising, on campus interviews, workshops, career events, employer presentations, on-campus interviews and office tours. After prospective student inquiries at the Admissions Office, we are one of the other first points of contact that a prospective student has with FAU. The Career Development Center has a very high traffic volume and represents FAU to the outside community. The TV’s will run PowerPoint presentations for the center to visually inform students about upcoming events, workshops, job fairs, programs, internship deadlines, feature FAU interns of the month and will include slides with photos of FAU students on location at their internship sites to promote student participation in experiential learning in support of student success and preparation to enter the workforce. The Career Development Center reception area features external glass walls to allow the campus community to view the state-of-the-art technology flat screen TV’s for increased visibility, marketing and promotion of career services, events and programs.
In addition we seek funding to work with Vidpop Productions video production company (an approved FAU vendor) to have them update the career planning content and reshoot the Major KnOWLedge videos for this early career exploration program that is soon to become a requirement for all new admitted students FTIC and transfers to FAU.
Student success measures include an increased emphasis on early career exploration to help new students quickly determine majors and graduate on time. FAU Flight Plans are to be customized for each student as he or she works with an academic advisor to select a degree program and balance coursework and developmental milestones with additional life demands. Reflection upon—and exploration of—career goals and personal aspirations are also critical components of this planning process. Thus, the tools and resources provided by FAU’s Career Development Center (CDC) are integral to this process. Parallel to Flight Plan implementation, the CDC has launched a new web-based tool called “Major KnOWLedge” which provides a portal to resources with which students can assess skills and interests, explore career options and employment information, and identify FAU degree programs that are good matches with their plans and preferences. This tool has been made available to all FAU students, but it will be required for all incoming students in the coming academic year. Completion rates for the Major KnOWLedge tool will be a key metric for FAU’s student success initiative and is part of the universities improvement plan for the BOG. It is for these reasons that we seek funding to update and revise the content in the videos and produce videos that provide for an enhanced use of technology to deliver the career planning content.
