Narrative
The Computer Music Sequencing Lab (Al -348) is the primary teaching and instructional support lab used by students and faculty of the Commercial Music program. It contains 28 computer workstations that are used daily by students to complete their assigned coursework. Each station contains industry-standard music production software and hardware. In order for our students to be competitive in the workforce, students need to achieve mastery with the tools we offer in this lab.
The last time the lab was refurbished was in 2014. We are in dire need of updating the lab since the computers are way past their serviceable life, and many computers in the lab are no longer functioning. The peripheral components such as audio interfaces, midi keyboards, and headphones have also met their serviceable life.
Recently, the Department of Music voted to create a Music Technology Fundamentals course that will be taught to all music majors. This now doubles the use of this lab for commercial music majors and minors, as well as all music majors and minors. Being that this is the only lab of its kind on campus, and it has dedicated software and hardware components that are specific to music production, the need to redo the lab at this particular moment in time is critical.
The courses that are currently taught in this lab are
MUM 3301 001 Introduction to Music Business
MUM 3663 001 Sound Recording 1
MUM 3663 002 Sound Recording 1
MUM 4665 001 Sound Recording 3
MUM 4723 001 Music Production
MUC 4610 001 Music Composition for Film
MUC 6615 001 Adv Music Compositn for Film
MUM 4642 001 Audio Post-Product for Picture
MUM 4664 001 Sound Recording 2
MUS 4343 001 Computer Music Sequencing
MUS 4911 001 RI: Commercial Music Topic Res
MUS 4913 002 RI: Commercial Mus Rsrch Proj
MUT 2341 001 Intro to Commercial Arranging
The proposed Music Technology Fundamental course will also be taught in this lab. Thank you for reviewing this application.
Facilities
No renovations are needed for the space. Tables, chairs, and networking are still in good working condition.
Hardware Requirements
All hardware requirements are documented within the provided quotes. Commercial music faculty will handle all hardware replacements (audio interfaces, keyboards, and computers). Computer surplus will be handled by Arts and Letters College computing division.
Software Requirements
All software is documented in the attached product quotes. Installation and upgrades will be handled by Commercial Music faculty
Other Costs
No other costs other than those quoted
Timeline
The lab needs to be fully functional for Fall 2025. Installation of all software and hardware will occur at the end of the spring semester.
Sustainability
Based on past iterations of the lab, I anticipate the lab will need to be redone in 5-7 years. The only reason it lasted as long as it did was due to the two years we were forced to go online through Covid. Also, factored into the quote are perpetual licenses of software, that are not bound to yearly upgrades such as subscriptions. Subscription plans tend to be higher in the long run and the software quoted should last the duration of computers
Implementing Organization
Lab will configured by CM faculty
