Narrative

This proposal requests funding for additional equipment for the Acoustic Research Laboratory that is hosted at the Department of Languages, Linguistics & Comparative Literature. The laboratory was established in the Fall of 2014 using tech fee grant funds allocated under the "FAU speaks" proposal (the 2013 fiscal year). The primary purpose of the Laboratory is to provide facilities and equipment for the collection and analysis of linguistic data by undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in linguistics courses with a major empirical component, such as LIN3010 Introduction to Linguistics, LIN4326 Contrastive Phonology, LIN4701 Psycholinguistics, LIN6938 Psycholinguistics, and LIN6938 Phonetics & Phonology.

Given the high demand for the equipment that is available for students to use/check out in order to collect and analyze linguistic data and to enhance the learning experience of undergraduate and graduate students (including students in the Comparative Studies PhD program), funding for the following additional equipment is being requested:

- 4 PC laptops (including carrying cases; to be used for collection of speech perception data and analysis of both perception and production data);

- 4 response pads (an 8-button version; to be used with laptops for collection of perception data);

- 4 copies of the SPSS software license (to be used for data analysis);

- 4 copies of the E-Prime 2.0 Run-time Data Collection License (to be used for presentation of perceptual stimuli and collection of participants’ responses);

- 2 iPads (Wi-Fi only version; to be used for the presentation of stimulus words and sentences in speech production experiments);

- 2 copies of the “Conference Pad” iPad app (to be used for speech production experiments; when installed on 2 iPads simultaneously, the app allows remote control of the presentation of stimulus words/sentences on one iPad from another iPad, which makes it possible for the experimenter to go back to the previous stimulus word/sentence that was pronounced incorrectly, to skip stimulus items, etc.);

- 6 USB headphones (professional quality; to be used with laptops and iPads for the presentation of auditory stimuli).
