Narrative
This proposal seeks funding to address two primary needs within the General Physics Lab: replacing outdated data collection devices and introducing new experimental setups for foundational physics principles. These upgrades will ensure continuous lab functionality and enhance student understanding of core concepts in physics. 1. Replacement of Data Collection Interface (PASCO 850 Interface): Our primary data collection device, the PASCO 850 Interface, has been used for a decade, and units have begun to fail. We recently exhausted our last backup, putting lab operations at risk. The General Physics Lab requires 32 functioning interfaces daily to support over 1,000 students each semester. Funding for new PASCO 850 Interfaces will prevent interruptions in lab activities, maintaining the high quality of instruction and data analysis experience for students. 2. Introduction of New Experiments: # Coulomb’s Law Experiment: Coulomb’s Law is essential for understanding electricity and magnetism, yet our lab lacks a hands-on experiment to illustrate its principles effectively. Funding is requested to purchase 6 experimental setups, ensuring every lab group can access this crucial demonstration. # Conservation of Energy Experiment: Conservation of energy is fundamental to physics education. We request six setups to demonstrate energy conservation principles: two for each lab section and four for class-wide demonstrations. These setups will allow students to explore this delicate concept firsthand, solidifying their understanding. Expected Impact: This proposal ensures that students can complete data collection activities without interruption and gain hands-on experience with two essential physics concepts, improving engagement and learning outcomes.
