Narrative
Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Libraries formally requests funding to acquire twenty new Macbook Air laptops to enhance the existing technology loaner program. This strategic acquisition is designed to significantly improve student access to high-performance computing resources essential for advanced coursework and general academic needs. The addition of twenty Macbook Air laptops directly addresses a documented need for access to high-performance computing and specialized software required in various academic programs. The laptops are necessary to support courses like the Engineering iOS Development course (COT 5930), which requires access to Apple's iOS development tools, including XCode. Providing these devices on loan ensures that students in these highly technical programs have the necessary equipment to complete specialized assignments and projects without the prohibitive cost of personal ownership. Furthermore, this expansion of the loaner pool is vital for providing widespread access. These laptops will be available to the general student body through the standard library loaner program, expanding access to premium computing technology for students across all disciplines at FAU. This investment will provide FAU students with enhanced academic performance through access to powerful, industry-standard equipment necessary for advanced development, media creation, and data analysis. It offers flexibility and convenience by providing reliable, portable technology available on a short-term & a long-term loan basis, thereby reducing financial and logistical barriers to access for all students. This proposal represents a direct investment in the success of FAU students by ensuring they have access to the tools required to excel in a competitive, technology-driven academic environment.
