The Student Athlete Center for Academic Excellence (SACAE) provides academic support to the student-athlete population at Florida Atlantic University. Some of the services student-athletes have access to includes weekly advising meetings, learning strategy improvement, study skill and time management building, individual and group tutoring, life skills events, mentoring, assistance with other offices on campus, and team study halls. The Athletic Academic Advisors and the Learning Specialist at the SACAE currently facilitate these services which helps allow student-athletes to maximize their collegiate experience at Florida Atlantic University. Due to the nature of our student population, a large portion of this facilitation requires flexible hours, a high level of mobility on and off campus, and regular access to computers. On campus, the SACAE staff regularly travels to meet with various offices on campus as well as coaching staffs. Off campus, the staff often works in remote locations such as from home, while traveling with teams to assist with academic needs, or to attend continuing education events. Much of the work of the SACAE staff is done on a computer, making it necessary have constant access to a computer. However, the staff is currently unable to operate at their full potential without constant access to their computers.
The need for access to technology paired with the mobility needs of the SACAE is the reason we are requesting 10 Surface Pro 3’s to be used by the nine full time SACAE staff. This not only will allow the staff to better aid student-athletes while traveling with teams, it will also allow the staff to attend events and meetings on campus with access to necessary information. In addition, this will also provide the most up-to-date information to our student-athletes, coaches, and other offices on campus. Further, by having access to their files, the staff will be better able to assist the student-athletes when working in remote locations such as evening and Sunday study halls. The additional Surface Pro will be used by our interns as they run our mentoring program. Due to our space limitations, they often must move their meetings to remote areas of the Oxley building. The provision of this proposal request will allow the ability of the SACAE staff to be more mobile which will help provide better overall services to our student-athletes, coaches, and other offices on campus. This will ultimately facilitate in the retention and timely graduation of student-athletes, which along with enhancing the educational experience of students, is an important initiative by Florida Atlantic University.10 MS Surface Pro 3 128GB
