Narrative
This proposal seeks funding for a manufacturing station for the Department of Geosciences. This station will consist of BambuLabs X1C 3d printers and a xTool P2S Laser Cutter, which will provide the ability to rapidly print and create various geoscience samples and models in-house. This will address a crucial issue in the Geoscience classrooms: reliance on limited, fragile and expensive geoscience models and samples. The current absence of these significantly hinders the innate hands-on nature of the discipline and the learning of complex geoscience principles. The Bambu Lab X1C 3d printers will allow the on-demand production of replica samples (e.g. fossils, crystal structures) and will be tailored to laboratories, providing students with a tactile learning experience. This also permits the inclusion of otherwise unobtainable original samples through rarity or cost. Rapid printing capability at low cost will allow for bulk production of identical samples, drastically reducing the cost and time associated with external ordering from weeks to days or hours. The xTool P2S laser cutter is intended for production of topographic models; three dimensional representations of 2d topographic maps, as well as models which require internal visualization. Over 400 undergraduate students annually will directly benefit from the tactile learning these will permit in both classrooms and laboratories, across courses GLY2010, GLY3603, GLY4310 and GLY4500. Equipment will be additionally be available to students for research.
