Narrative
"The mission of the Department of Exceptional Student Education is to provide leadership in our local, state, national and international communities in the areas of teaching, research, and service. Faculty and Department efforts promote research-based practices that reflect changing societal needs of people with disabilities, their families, and the professionals and organizations who work with them. This is accomplished by bringing faculty, students, and members of our various communities together to improve the quality of education for all members of an increasingly diverse, technological, inclusive, and global society" (http://www.coe.fau.edu/academicdepartments/ese/).

The ESE Department mission, along with the purpose of this project, align with the College of Education's mission, including "seek to promote and sustain authentic change, excellence and equity in their respective fields, and in the organizations and systems with which they are associated. The College’s programs reflect changing societal needs and incorporate web-supported delivery systems..." (http://www.coe.fau.edu/aboutcoe/documents/coe_Mission.pdf).

The culminating experience for our undergraduate students in the program is the semester-long full-time teaching internship, where they receive intensive mentoring and support from classroom teachers and University Supervisors. University Supervisors are experienced ESE teachers, whose expertise and guidance provides the framework and direction for our preservice undergraduate and graduate teacher interns. The ESE Department graduates more than 90% of the interns.

The ESE Department has observational systems and performance ratings scales that have traditionally been in a paper and pencil format. In anticipation of this project, all of these forms have been digitized to enable ESE University Supervisors to provide feedback to preservice teachers, and immediately share this information virtually with all stakeholders. For undergraduates, this system has been piloted and proven valuable for both efficiency and immediacy. In addition, University Supervisors are currently being trained on the school district observation systems to align the goals and objectives of both the university and the school districts, which are online systems as well.

This technology fee proposal is being submitted to enhance the student teaching experience by enabling University Supervisors and students to share information electronically. Students will be able to access feedback forms immediately, reflect on their performance, and improve their effective teaching practices. Students involved in the pilot of this proposal were highly satisfied with the immediate access to virtual feedback forms, which were previously paper/pencil format. This allowed for digital uploading versus paper storage and supports the University’s environmental concerns.

Facilitating access to online forms will create the opportunities for the development of an electronic portfolio for all students in the ESE Department, which will make the student more marketable as a prospective teacher. Data from portfolios will also be archived for university accreditation purposes, which benefits both the ESE Department and the College of Education. The ESE Department will transform its supervision practice with the new tools funded by this project.
